2016 AGM and Field Weekend (Cancelled)

Due to a lack of interest the below advertised AGM and Field Weekend has been cancelled. We apologise for any inconvenience.

OGHT AGM will be on Friday after lunch at 1pm on the 16th September at the Arrowtown Fire Station Hall – 2 Hertford St, Arrowtown. Click here to register now.

From here we will all drive together to Frankton where those not taking their 2WD vehicles can park them up on the road verge beside the golf course and hop in with others in their 4WD. (Who’s riding with who will be worked out in the weeks prior to the weekend). A donation of $10-$20 for the driver would be appropriate we think.

It is then a 40min drive out to Moke Lake and the start of the drive into the Lodge. Many of you will have been to Moke Lake before but probably not all the way up the valley to Ben Lomond Lodge. Not too far in, we will stop at a point of interest to have our afternoon ‘picnic in the hills’ and here some stories of the history of the area.
There will be another couple of short stops looking at tailings and things before we finally arrive at the Lodge by late afternoon in time to settle into our accommodations and adjourn to the communal lounge and the large roaring fire.
Before dinner we will meet our hosts and hear their story of the station and plans for the following day.

Saturday 17th September starts with a shared Breakfast at 8am before collecting our packed lunches and loading into the 4WD’s for a mission out to the back of the Station – numerous stops along the way to point out areas of interest and hear story of times gone past. We will have a picnic lunch out the ‘back of beyond’ before retracing our steps back to the Lodge.

For those who are so inclined, there is a lovely (not too arduous) walk that starts up the valley before we get all the way back to the lodge. Terry Will be leading a walk through here while those less keen/able will stay with the 4WD’s and drive back to the Lodge. Expected wandering time of about 1.5 -2.5 hours. Includes native bush and mining sites… Then it’s back for a quiet drink beside the open fire before dinner.

This day’s planned 4WD trip out the back of the farm is dependent on the condition of the track. It is expected to be fine but if there has been serious rain or lingering snow drifts we may need to amend things.

Sunday 18th September. After breakfast we shall pack up the vehicles and start our journey out of the valley but stop quite soon for a short walk through some more native bush and explore some old tailings. Depending on the river levels we may be able to take a different route back to Moke Lake and stop to explore some more remnants of the exploration for Gold. Time for one more picnic ‘smoko’ in the hills before the road turns back to tar seal. Terry will have a pack-full of tea/coffee/milk/sugar and biscuits for random smoko’s over the weekend. Please BYO mug.

We plan on being back to ‘civilisation’ and the 2WD vehicles by 1pm on the Sunday. There is a good – not-too-busy pub across the road for those so inclined to have one more shared lunch or the BP on the corner does wonderful pies/sandwiches for you to grab as you drive home.
